The Nitrogen Working Group (NWG) at UVA was founded in 2014 in response to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors' commitment to reduce UVA's nitrogen footprint, first by 25% by 2025, and later updated to 30% by 2030 as part of UVA's 2020–2030 Sustainability Plan. Operating as a branch of the Office for Sustainability and in partnership with the Morven Sustainability Lab, the NWG is dedicated to tracking and reducing the University's nitrogen footprint through data-driven research and community engagement.
Today, the NWG is made up of several student-led teams, including a data team, an outreach team, and a Morven team. Each team contributes to UVA's broader sustainability goals from footprint calculations to social outreach and field research; our work aims to lead the charge in reducing nitrogen across universities for a more sustainable future. While significant progress has been made, we remain committed to continuing that work and helping UVA reach and exceed its 2030 goal.
