Founder and Director, The Learning Hub

Associate Professor, Department of Psychology
University of Virginia

Mariana Teles is the founder and director of the Cognitive Science-Based Learning Hub, an initiative at the University of Virginia that translates research from cognitive science into practical learning strategies for college students.

Her work focuses on understanding how students learn and on developing evidence-based educational interventions that improve comprehension, retention, and academic success in higher education. Through the Learning Hub, she leads research examining how students adopt effective study strategies and how these practices influence learning outcomes.

At the University of Virginia, Dr. Teles has pioneered the integration of active learning approaches into large-enrollment courses and developed programs that help first-year students build effective study habits early in their academic careers. Her work bridges cognitive psychology, educational research, and instructional innovation.

In addition to directing the Learning Hub, she teaches undergraduate courses in cognitive science and psychology and studies how emerging technologies, including AI-assisted learning tools, can support effective studying and improve educational outcomes.
