Helping First-Year Students Learn How to Learn in the Age of AI

The Cognitive Science-Based Learning Hub is an initiative of the Cognitive Science program at the University of Virginia that translates research from cognitive science into practical strategies to help college students become more effective, independent, and self-regulated learners.

The program supports first-year students in developing effective study habits, understanding complex academic material, and preparing for exams through evidence-based strategies grounded in the science of learning and memory. Through structured sessions and guided practice, students learn to apply these strategies to their coursework, monitor their understanding, and take greater ownership of their learning.

As generative AI transforms how students study and engage with knowledge, the Learning Hub also examines how students can use AI to enhance, rather than replace, the cognitive processes essential for learning. Our goal is to help students make informed decisions about when to rely on AI assistance and when to engage in independent thinking, ensuring that technology supports the development of knowledge, critical thinking, and metacognitive skills.

Beyond supporting students, the Learning Hub serves as a research platform for understanding and improving learning in higher education. We investigate how students develop and sustain effective learning strategies, how these practices influence academic outcomes, and how interactions with AI tools can either strengthen or undermine learning and cognitive independence.
