Our Mission

Helping First-Year Students Learn How to Learn

The Cognitive Science-Based Learning Hub is an initiative from the Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia that translates research from cognitive science into practical learning strategies for college students.

The program supports first-year students in developing effective study habits, improving comprehension of complex academic texts, and preparing for exams using techniques grounded in scientific research on learning and memory. Through structured sessions and guided practice, students learn how to apply evidence-based strategies directly to their coursework.

Beyond supporting students, the Learning Hub also serves as a platform for research on learning and academic success. The program evaluates how students adopt learning strategies, how these practices influence academic outcomes, and how technology, including AI tools, can support effective studying.

This work is supported by the Jefferson Trust and the Learning and Technology Design Incubator at the University of Virginia.
