Ulka Anjaria is Professor of English at Brandeis University where she directs the Mandel Center for the Humanities. She is the author of Realism in the Twentieth-Century Indian Novel: Colonial Difference and Literary Form (Cambridge University Press, 2012), a path-breaking study of mid 20th-century Indian novels that focused on the movement of progressive writing that became dominant in the lead-up to Indian independence. Her second book, Reading India Now: Contemporary Formations in Literature and Popular Culture (Temple University Press, 2019), considers the relationship of contemporary Indian literature and film to new political imaginaries in India. Anjaria is also the editor of A History of the Indian Novel in English (Cambridge University Press, 2015) and The Oxford Handbook of Modern Indian Literatures (Oxford University Press, 2024). Her most recent book is Understanding Bollywood: The Grammar of Hindi Cinema (Routledge, 2021). A prolific scholar, Anjaria has published many essays on Bollywood, queer Indian writing, 21st-century realism, and Pakistani literature.
