Bio

Miao-fen Tseng 曾妙芬has actively promoted task-based language teaching, modeled online teaching and learning, and established global partnerships for community-based experiential learning for F2F, hybrid, and online instruction. She is currently leading world language faculty in ten languages to explore the multi-functionality of GenAI and its application to world language teaching and learning. Her influential roles include, but are not limited to, Director of UVA STARTALK Teacher/Student Academy, Founder and President of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Virginia (CLTA-VA), member of the CLTA Board of Directors, member of STARTALK Task Force, College Board consultant in AP Chinese, Academic Advisor and Senior Reviewer for AP Chinese Audit, and Evaluator of K-16 Chinese language programs and teacher preparation programs. Being passionate about teacher development, she has given more than 250 invited talks and workshops on Chinese language pedagogy and taught graduate-level courses under the auspices of various collaborative initiatives and professional development programs in the US and globally. Many K-16 Chinese language educators and graduate students have greatly benefitted from her professional experience and aspired to be regional and global leaders. She has received many accolades in recognition of her contribution to Chinese language education, among them Daniels Family NEH Distinguished Teaching Professor (2021-2023), the Albert Nelson Marquis Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award (2019), the STARTALK Award (2008-2019, 2021-2024), the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Taipei (2018, 2023), the Jefferson Trust Award (2018), the Helen Warriner-Burke FLAVA Distinguished Service Award (2016), and the Jiede Empirical Research grant (2015) and Ron Walton Best Presentation Award (1998) by CLTA. She has published near 30 peer-reviewed articles and twelve books, including an OER Pressbooks publication entitled US-China Virtual Exchange Program in Beijing (https://pressbooks.library.virginia.edu/nehcourse); Authentic Chinese (I): Textbook, Workbook, Task Workbook, and Character Workbook; Teach Chinese Online: An Essential Guide; The Handbook of Tasks and Rubrics for Teaching Mandarin Chinese (Volume I, II, III); AP Chinese Language and Culture Teacher’s Guide;  and Promoting Professionalism in Teaching AP Chinese (推动专业化的AP中文教学). Her major interests lie in task-based language teaching, GenAI in language teaching and learning, online teaching and technology, teacher development, and CFL curriculum design and pedagogy.
