The Use of AI

Submissions must represent original student work. The use of generative artificial intelligence (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini) for writing, data analysis, or content creation is not permitted.

Positionality/Diversity Statements

As apart of our submission process we encourage students to provide positionality statements with their proposal. The purpose of this statement is to clearly explain and allow for reflection on your own identities and how they may have influenced your research. Statements of positionality can be lengthy, but to meet the requirements of this proposal, three to five sentences will suffice. We are asking you to consider your positionality as practice for future instances where it may be required. The content of this statement is not part of the criteria for your submission.

As you begin to prepare your presentation, please use the Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Collective's DEIA Toolkit for speakers found HERE. For six examples of positionality statements, scroll to the end of this document on positionality statements Links to an external site. compiled by the editors of JSPR and PR. Another example journal article and positionality statement from Dr. Walt Heinecke is included below.

If you're unsure why this may be important, this video from the UCLA Library Links to an external site. discusses the connection between identity and research.
