Building for the Future

We build the University by continuing to attract the best minds to serve on the faculty - people like Dr. Charles E. Myers, an internationally known scientist and physician who came to Charlottesville this year as director of the University of Virginia Cancer Center. We build by engaging the creativity and commitment of top-notch administrators and staff, leaders like Leonard W. Sandridge, executive vice president and chief financial officer, who received last year's Thomas Jefferson Award. And, of course, we build the University quite literally with bricks and mortar, an intimidating task given Thomas Jefferson's example.

 

Breaking Ground for the Coming Century

Thanks to voter approval of a general obligation bond issue, generous private contributions, and funds from sponsored research for higher education, a number of construction projects are presently under way or have been completed around Grounds. They range from the renovation of Old Cabell Hall, including refurbishing the auditorium and repairing Stanford White's facade, to the construction of an entirely new home for the Darden School on North Grounds.

The list includes:

  • Bryan Hall. Offices and classrooms for the English Department.
  • Jordan Hall. An addition for research laboratories and a medical school conference center.
  • Chemistry. An addition for laboratories and offices.
  • Newcomb Hall Parking. With space for more than four hundred cars, this
  • new structure houses the bookstore and facilities for visitors.
  • Gilmer Field Recreation. A swimming pool, exercise rooms, dining area, and bookstore annex, all located in the center of student housing.
  • Law Grounds. A $23 million project to remodel and refurbish the existing law and Darden buildings and integrate the two into a single Law Grounds complex.

Faculty Who Set New Standards for Scholarship

No group is more inspiring than our senior scholars, who encourage students and junior faculty by the variety of their achievement and the breadth of their erudition. Endowed professorships, created through the generosity of our alumni and friends, help the University attract and retain professors at the head of their fields. The University had established 357 endowed chairs at the end of fiscal year 1993-94. Forty distinguished faculty were named to endowed professorships during this period. They are:
