Teaching

Every spring, Amanda teaches an undergraduate survey on the art and material culture of the Islamic world, from 630 to 2023, from Iberia to Indonesia. She also teaches undergraduate courses on the art and architecture of the Ottoman Empire and Istanbul in particular, about Islamic calligraphy, about the trade in global objects, and about how we can learn from objects. Graduate seminars include those on methods and theories of material culture and the historiography of Islamic art.

Every other autumn, Lisa Reilly (A-School) and Amanda teach a seminar-style class on the cities, architecture, and art of the Medieval Medterranean, meant for all students interested in learning more about the overlapping visual and material traditions in Islam and Christianity  during the Middle Ages.

Students interested in graduate studies focused on textiles and other material from the Islamic world are encouraged to be in touch.
