Teaching

Amanda Phillips at a workshop in Abu Dhabi

Every spring, Amanda teaches an undergraduate survey on the art and material culture of the Islamic world, from 630 to 2023, from Iberia to Indonesia. She also teaches undergraduate courses on the art and architecture of the Ottoman Empire and Istanbul in particular, about Islamic calligraphy, about the trade in global objects, and about how we can learn from objects. Graduate seminars include those on methods and theories of material culture and the historiography of Islamic art.

Amanda's class in the College Curriculum's Engagements discusses on how humans learn from objects and the physical environment, as part of a larger discussion of empiricism.

Students interested in graduate studies focused on textiles and other material from the Islamic world are encouraged to be in touch.
