This piece makes a common argument that religious belief has played and continues to play an important part in the struggle to overcome White supremacy in America.  The author points to Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. William J. Barber II as contemporary descendants of this view.

I am simply unconvinced that the same structures are funding the contemporary movements for Black lives in the same way.  Something large has changed in Black life in the United States, and it has something to do with the changing role of explicit religious institutions.  

I don’t have a lot of insight on this, but I’m looking for it.  I am looking for insight into the changing shape of religious institutions in US public life in general, and the changing shape of Black religious institutions in US public life in particular.  If you have any thoughts, please send them my way.
