Shea House

ASL at Shea House

Shea House is an alternative living option for students wishing to have an immersive experience in a language. Shea House is open to any full-time student at the University of Virginia who can demonstrate at least a first-year competency in their language. All ASL students are able to take advantage of this unique opportunity to live with their fellow peers and enhance their signing ability, learn more about Deaf culture, and simply have fun. For more information about Shea House in general, please visit https://shea.virginia.edu/.

Events

Residents in Shea earn credit hours for living here by engaging in daily signing dinners (Monday through Thursday) and weekly language corners. Dinners are a mostly social event where everyone comes together and debriefs about their days. Shea residents buy a special language house specific dining plan; the dining room is on the second floor of the house and frequently serves special culturally-specific meals. Language corners are generally more educational. Past events have included interpreter Q&A's, professor round table discussions, and lecture series. This year, we have gone to the farmer's market as a group and only communicated through sign, celebrated Deaf Awareness week, and had game nights as a hall.

Language Assistant - Hannah Tuten

Hannah Tuten is a third-yeHannah_Tutenar undergraduate student from Richmond, VA. She is in the McIntire School of Commerce double-majoring in Commerce and English and minoring in ASL. Hannah wants to one day work in marketing or journalism for a non-profit or sustainable organization. Her dream job is to work for National Geographic. She has been learning ASL since high school and has completed ASL 2010, 2020, 3010, 3400, and 4112 while at UVA. Outside of Shea, you can find her up in the air on aerial silks, volunteering at festivals, at any and all local concerts, or working downtown for the Tom Tom Foundation! Hannah is super excited to be the second-ever ASL LA in Shea House and host a variety of fun cultural, social, and language-centric events! Her favorite things about living in Shea are the "tiny close-knit hall" that allows for great community, and the 5-minute walk to class!
