Requirements for the Minor
The ASL minor consists of 18 credits. The following courses, consisting of 6 credits, are required for all minors:
- ASL 3010 Conversational ASL
- ASL 4750 Topics in Deaf Studies
The remaining 12 credits are comprised of ASL electives above the 2020 level or Independent Studies in ASL. Non-ASL courses (e.g., LNGS, ANTH, EDHS) having significant relation to, a significant focus on, or major project involving ASL may also be counted towards the minor upon approval. Up to 6 credits may be transferred from other institutions upon approval. A grade of C or better must be earned in each of these courses.
Applying for the Minor
In order to apply for the Minor in ASL and Deaf Culture, students should meet or email the Director of the ASL Program. After discussing how ASL relates to their academic study and career plans, the student will complete a worksheet detailing which ASL classes they plan to take and when. The worksheet will then be discussed with the Director. After significant progress towards the minor has been made, a minor declaration form will be filled out by the student and Director, signed, and submitted by the student to the registrar of their school.
Questions about the Minor in ASL and Deaf Culture should be directed to Greg Propp, the current ASL Program Director at gp5c@virginia.edu.
