Conversations in Caribbean Studies

Conversations in Caribbean Studies

Inaugurated in spring 2019, this seminar series brings together three scholars to discuss pertinent topics in the field of Caribbean Studies. Eschewing with the traditional format of scholarly presentation, each contributor speaks for only 10-12 minutes before engaging with questions from the convener and the audience. The goal is to facilitate conversation rather than lecture, and dialogue over monologue, in the hopes of encouraging the kinds of collaboration and connection that have been vital in the history of the Caribbean archipelago.

"Legacies of the New World Avenger," a conversation with Laurent Dubois, Julia Gaffield, and Gregory Pierrot. 3 May 2019. University of Virginia.

2019 marks the 15th-anniversary of the publication of Laurent Dubois’s Avengers of the New World (2004), the first narrative history of the Haitian Revolution to be published in the English language since the landmark appearance of C.L.R. James’s The Black Jacobins in 1938. Dubois's book heralded a new era of scholarly interest in the Haitian Revolution among Anglophone scholars. Several newer books that were published in the wake of these earlier works include Julia Gaffield’s Haitian Connections in the Atlantic World: Recognition After Revolution (2015) and Grégory Pierrot’s The Black Avenger in Atlantic Culture (2019). In this, the inaugural event of the Conversations in Caribbean Studies Colloquium, these authors will discuss the broad impact of studies of the New World Avenger on the fields of Haitian, Caribbean, Atlantic, and American historical, literary, and cultural studies.
