Mission
The University of Virginia has long been one of the world’s most vibrant scenes for research and exploration. Today, it’s important, even urgent, to protect and promote what’s best about UVA and university life anywhere — by asserting the foundational values of free speech, academic freedom, civil discourse, and viewpoint diversity. Think Again @ UVA seeks to help UVA students thrive by encouraging them to be, as a great philosopher once said, "Curious, not judgmental."
Think Again is a program in the College of Arts and Sciences, created by UVA faculty from across the University who believe a world-class education can be advanced by::
- highlighting the benefits of free speech and the dangers of censorship
- pushing back against the intellectual over-confidence that drives intolerance, and making the case for intellectual humility and a competition of ideas
- urging people to exercise intellectual charity instead of attributing bad motives to those with whom we disagree
- demonstrating the benefits of diverse viewpoints by showcasing policy areas in which dissenting views offer valuable insights into what is likely to create better lives for all Americans
- working across ideological lines to explore practical solutions to complicated problems, problems on which we share goals but disagree on means
Think Again fully endorses UVA's Statement on Free Expression and Free Inquiry.
