Building technopolitical futures for a more just and participatory democracy.

About

The Technopolitics and Democracy Lab is a research group dedicated to examining how digital technologies shape, and are shaped by, political power, collective action, and democratic life. Technopolitics refers to the dynamic interplay between technology and political processes, emphasizing how digital tools can enable participation, strengthen democratic practices, and challenge centralized control. At the same time, it acknowledges that these same tools can concentrate power, facilitate manipulation, and amplify mechanisms of social control. Democracy, in this context, is understood not only as a system of governance but as an ongoing practice of collective decision-making, accountability, and citizen empowerment. Our work focuses on technopolitical approaches that advance democratic values, arguing that technology is never neutral and must be designed through open, transparent, and collaborative processes- rather than imposed through proprietary, top-down models. Through interdisciplinary research, we explore how technological infrastructures, platforms, and policies can be built to support more just, inclusive, and participatory democratic futures.
