Welcome

I teach in the Department of Religious Studies and the Department of American Studies at the University of Virginia. As a historian I specialize in religion, culture, and politics in the late nineteenth and twentieth-century United States. My central questions probe the intersections of American modernity and Protestant and post-Protestant religious modernity in the United States, which means I think a lot about liberalism, spirituality, secularism, political economy, and the mechanisms of culture.
