Research

Areas of Specialization:  African-American Philosophy, Post-Kantian Philosophy/ German Idealism, Hegel, and Philosophy of Race

Areas of Competence:  Feminist Philosophy and Metaphilosophy

I specialize in exploring the philosophical dimensions of the black experience. My dissertation focused on the black reception of Hegel, and Hegelian themes still serve as a foundation for much of my work.

With my training in the history of philosophy, I examine how African-American figures such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Anna Julia Cooper provide unique answers to our philosophical questions. Currently, I am working on completing a monograph titled, The Truth of Race: The Metaphilosophy of W. E. B. Du Bois. I am editing a volume Du Bois on Political Economy for Oxford New Histories of Philosophy with several co-editors.

My research also encompasses Feminist Philosophy. I am interested in the theoretical connection between race and gender. Looking ahead, my second major project will focus on what I think of as Anna Julia Cooper's maternal theory of race.
