Morgan Pitelka is the Bernard L. Herman Distinguished Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, jointly appointed in History and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. A specialist in Japanese history and material culture, he earned his PhD from Princeton and conducted research at Kyoto University. His award-winning publications include Reading Medieval Ruins and Spectacular Accumulation. He has held fellowships from the NEH, National Humanities Center, and UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities. Pitelka co-edits the Journal of Japanese Studies and frequently lectures internationally on topics ranging from samurai sociability to urban archaeology and Japanese ceramics.
