University of Virginia Summer Language Institute. Offers an intensive Russian Language Program, the equivalent of which is two years of traditional instruction.

Funding Opportunities:

Center for Undergraduate Excellence. The Center for Undergraduate Excellence advises students regarding undergraduate research opportunities and national scholarships and fellowships.

Harrison Undergraduate Research Awards. Approximately forty awards of up to $3000 each will be granted on a competitive basis to current first-, second-, and third-year undergraduate students. Applicants must be fulltime undergraduates at U.Va. and must remain enrolled at the University through the completion of their project.

Raven Society Fellowship. Open to all UVA students in support of summer or fall undergraduate or graduate independent research projects. Special consideration will be given to those pursuing study outside of Charlottesville.

Small Research and Travel Grants. $500. Open to any student in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Undergraduate Research Network. Regularly organizes information events related to undergraduate research and has a variety of resources.

Programs Abroad

American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL). List of available Slavic language courses and programs in the US and abroad. The “Professional Development” section provides information regarding grants, fellowships, internships, and jobs.

American Councils for International Education (ACTR/ACCELS). American Councils administers a variety of cultural exchange, study abroad, and research programs on behalf of both public and private funders. Participation in these programs is through an open, merit-based competition, and facilitates mutual understanding between the United States and Eurasia, Southeast Europe, and South Asia. There are also employment opportunities for Slavic and Turkic language speakers.

American Institute for Foreign Study (AFIS). Has a collection of study abroad and travel programs, most notably those located in the Czech Republic and Russia. Has available career opportunities for people that have the knowledge to lead tours in various foreign countries.

Center for Study Abroad (CSA). Offers a number of Russian language courses in St. Petersburg.

Central European University (Budapest, Hungary). Offers a variety of study abroad, internship, and research opportunities.

Cross-Cultural Solutions. Provides opportunities to volunteer in Yaroslavl, Russia.

European Spring/Summer Institute (Prague, Czech Republic). Provides academic programs concerning European Union development.

International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership. Provides service-learning study abroad programs in Prague and Moscow.

Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland). Provides study abroad opportunities for international students including semester-long and year-long Polish language classes.

Projects Abroad. Provides opportunities to volunteer in Romania and Moldova.

School for International Training. Offers study abroad programs throughout Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia in addition to numerous masters programs related to international development.

School for Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS). Offers a variety of language and study abroad programs throughout Russia and Central Asia. Also provides information regarding grants and internships.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). Provides a variety of funding opportunities for study and research of the humanities.

Caucasus Research Resource Centers. Provides internship and fellowships in Tbilisi, Baku, and Yerevan.

CDS: Alfa Fellowship Program. Places American citizens in work assignments at leading Russian organizations in the fields of business, economics, journalism, law, and government.

Council for International Exchange of Scholars . Organizes exchanges of scholars and administers the “Fulbright Scholar Program.”

Institute of International Education (IIE). Offers a variety of funding opportunities.

International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX). Offers a variety of grant and fellowship opportunities specifically catered for Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program. Provides funding for master’s level students studying in the fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Kennan Institute. Offers four different grant and fellowship opportunities related to Russian and the surrounding nations.

Kosciuszko Foundation. Offers several grants and scholarships relevant to Poland.

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund. Provides financial support for graduate school tuition and living expenses, and research and publishing costs in the humanities, social sciences or natural sciences (including law, medicine, engineering, architecture or other formal professional training).

MacArthur Foundation. Offers a wide variety of grant and fellowship opportunities.

National Bureau of Eurasian and East European Research (NCEER). Provides numerous internship and grant opportunities for research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

National Endowment for the Humanities . National Security Education Program Boren Scholarships and Fellowships. Provides scholarships for undergraduates and fellowships for graduate students to develop their language skills abroad.

Open Society Institute. Part of the Soros Foundations Network.

Social Science Research Council. The SSRC is an independent, nonprofit international organization founded in 1923 that offers a variety of fellowships and grants with special emphasis on the growing internationalization of social issues.

United States Institute of Peace. Grants and fellowships available to individuals, universities, nonprofit organizations and civil society organizations around the world.
