Communication for a Thriving Career in Science

Effective communication skills are an essential factor in your success both during and after graduate school. The Chemistry Science Communication (ChemSciComm) Committee noticed an unmet need for learning discipline-specific communication skills in the Chemistry Department. With this in mind, we have started a seminar series titled “Communication for a Thriving Career in Science” intended to help students improve their communication skills in the context of various professional development topics.

Since this is the first time the department has hosted an event like this, the topics we chose for this series are broad.  While professors lead some seminars (e.g. “Crafting a Strong Job Application”), students lead others (e.g. “Biases that Women Face in STEM”). Each seminar begins with a 15-minute presentation followed by an extended discussion/Q&A. This series is ultimately meant to promote and facilitate communication amongst faculty and students – faculty have the opportunity to share experiences and advice, while students have the opportunity to ask any and all questions related to communication and professional development.
