Seiji Tanabe

Research Scientist

Seiji's research interest is centered around the topic of neural coding. The model system he studies in the lab is the binocular integration circuitry of the primary visual cortex (V1). The retina in each eye receives a 2D projection of the 3D environment. It is crucial that the projections to each retina are slightly disparate. V1 is the site where the disparate signals from the two eyes are combined. His project is to study how the local circuits in V1 create 3D information about the environment from signals transmitted from the retinas. Basically, Seiji studies the neural mechanism of stereoscopic vision. Before Seiji had children, he loved to ride his motorcycle down twisty roads in the mountains. Now, his two sons keep him busy outside of work. He is also "covertly taking up biking with my sons so we all can have fun together".
