Fahad Ahmad Bishara is a historian of the Indian Ocean with a particular interest in the connected histories of the Gulf and Indian Ocean worlds. His first book, A Sea of Debt: Law and Economic Life in the Western Indian Ocean, 1780-1950 (Cambridge University Press, 2017) explored the intertwined legal and economic history of the Indian Ocean world through the history of Omani and Indian settlement and commercialization of East Africa. He is currently working on a history of the dhow trade between the Gulf and Indian Ocean, using it as a platform for thinking about questions of transregional history and the history of capitalism. As a member of the history faculty and as the director of the AGAP program, Fahad welcomes application from prospecive graduate students wanting to do work on the Indian Ocean, the Gulf, and the Arabian Peninsula, irrespective of time period.
